Yaasmeen Brown - Reflection #2 02/06/19

Yaasmeen Brown

Questions / comments/ ideas that stuck with me :
-How honest are people with themselves when they take this test ?
- The commitment to change - "If people are aware of their hidden biases, they can monitor and attempt to ameliorate hidden attitudes before they are expressed through behavior. This compensation can include attention to language, body language and to the stigmatization felt by target groups."

Reflection:

While I was reading the section in the article about learned prejudices I couldn't help but think of this video.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1qWzD_62Ec

the video supports the claim that as early as age 3, children pick up terms of racial prejudice without really understanding their significance.  This is a huge issue because children are made to believe that that type of language/ behavior is okay and they carry that with them into adulthood.

The conditions of which inmates are kept, the disparity in numbers and portrayal of those incarcerated. There is no question that factors such as education, employment, mental and physical health; the lack of access to such resources targets and propels African Americans through the pipeline to prison. In our history, it seems that prison, or largely the criminalization of African Americans, Black men in particularly, has been used as a tactic of oppr...

Tuition meeting

Speaking point: We have spent over 60 thousand dollars on this school so far, we have tolerated the raise each year. At some point we do not have more money to give and we are pushed out along with all of our debt including interest. With this false start we lack the motivation to attend another school in the future, therefore leaving us uneducated and in debt. Other than the knowledge gained, this would be a waste of two years of my life and in fact sets me back in my career.
