What strategies did she employ in her process of making in play with the youth?
Some of the strategies Mady Schutzman employed in her process of making a play with the youth were, utilizing the Joker System, presenting exercises to create a “safe” space by opening the floor and space to the youth to speak, reflect, and share their stories.
What approaches resonated with you?
Many of the approaches that were used were very intriguing and interesting, but there was one approach that resonated with me. Particularly, the questions that came out of one of the approaches. In the vein of the Joker System, it was designed to ,”promote social inquiry and personal agency by asking questions (How do I know what I know? Who authored the historical narratives we reiterate? Are those stories relevant to me and my community? Who do they privilege and who do they marginalize?” Mandy shared. These questions resonated with me because they are questions I have been asking myself this semester and have lead the inception of incredibly inspiring projects. The question “Who authored the historical narratives we reiterate?”, is basically words straight from my brain. This semester, some of my practice has been geared towards creating a platform (in the name of experience) to share the history, names, and accomplishments of the hidden women throughout history. I could go on forever about this project, the projects that are stemming out of this original idea, and all of the questions like who chooses the standardized curriculum and why do they choose what they choose? Why aren't we learning about the radical women that helped shape the world as we know it today? It was very exciting to read this question in the paper. Even though the content is completely different, it was so relatable to my current bubble of life.
How was the play relevant to this specific community?
The play was relevant to the community because they collaboratively rewrote the script together as a community. Pulling from their personal experiences and interests. They chose characters based off of real humans from the past, who exemplified similar or relatable circumstances some of them faced as well.
What questions might you ask Mady and why?
I don't believe I would have any questions for Mandy for the time being. I would simply like to thank her. Thank her for the energy, effort, and persistence she's exemplified with this practice. She's shared that as creatives, it’s important to ask any and all of the questions, even if they are rough to say or uncomfortable to hear. As content creators and consumers, I believe it’s important to create with a meaningful voice and pay attention to what we consume. After reading What A Riot and exercising with Mandy last week, I walk away with inspiration, knowledge, and perseverance to ask ALL OF THE QUESTIONS! Then create of course.
