It has been shown
numerous times that children learn prejudice from a very young age. My question
is, what types of activities can be implemented in school to try and negate
prejudice and promote interaction between people at a very young age. This also
reminds me of
an experiment conducted by Jane Elliott in 1968. Jane was a elementary school
teacher who decided to teach her class a lesson
about the meaning of discrimination.
I also thought it was note-worthy that just integrating
people did not help in eliminating prejudice. Rather it was when people were
put into a situation where they had to work together to solve shared problems
that a sense of community was established. This also seems like something that
could be helpful if implemented correctly in an academic situation. For me, it
was the collaboration of the theatrical process that brought me closer to
people I would not have otherwise been interacting with.
Another question I had was, what role does social media take
in furthering stereotypes and prejudice. Does it help spread main stream media
prejudice? Or does it oppose these main stream media ideals, since it is not
regulated in the same way?
