Hidden Bias Response
I thought it was very enlightening to read about where biases can come from--even if you are are raised in a loving and supportive home, biases can sneak in through the media you are exposed to from a young age, and who you spend most of your time with. Factors totally out of one's control as a young person. It made me thankful to have grown up in a loving household with a diverse group of family friends, even though I was brought up in a homogeneous neighborhood (to my and my family's disappointment).
The need for representation of POC and all marginalized groups is very, very high. Seeing and interacting with people unlike yourself are the key to deconstructing your biases. If this country stays as Caucasian-centric has it has for hundreds of years, children are going to keep growing up with biases that turn into dislike that turn into hatred. Integration and inclusion is a huge part of diminishing bias!
Reading the article made me think of an infamous quote from a liberal, white film director (I can't recall who!) that was something along the lines of "POC just don't fit into the world I'm creating". This thinking is so common in theater and film! How can the white experience be so all-encompassing that there is absolutely no room for anyone else in it? It's time for a major change in this thinking. So how can we get white people that think they don't have bias to check their privilege and work on their views?
